Howell returns to Owls lead Owls’ revival

The Boksburg Rugby Club stalwart wants to lift the club to new heights.

Boksburg Rugby Club has placed its hopes for a long-awaited resurgence in the hands of one of its most loyal sons, appointing former player and respected coach Travis Howell as head coach.

His return marks a decisive step in the club’s mission to rebuild its identity, strengthen competitiveness, and bring renewed energy to the Owls’ proud rugby tradition.

For Howell, coming back was about more than a role; it was about home.

“This club shaped me. Seeing the Owls struggle just didn’t feel right. I felt a responsibility to return and help restore what Boksburg Rugby has always stood for.”

Howell’s story with Boksburg spans more than two decades. He joined the U19 squad in 2002 and represented the first team for 18 consecutive years, finally hanging up his boots in 2022.

Through every high and low, he remained a constant presence, a player defined by loyalty, consistency, and heart.

When he transitioned into coaching, Howell proved he had just as much to offer off the field. He took charge of the Boksburg U21s in 2023, guiding them through a rebuilding season and then into the semi-finals in 2024.

His reputation soon attracted Alberton Rugby Club, who brought him in to coach their U21 forwards. The move broadened his experience, and under his guidance, Alberton rose from finishing last in the 2024 Lions League to reaching the semi-finals in 2025. The team ended the season as the top-performing club side, losing only to university teams.

That connection ultimately brought him back. After earnest discussions with committee members, former players, and long-time supporters, Howell accepted the role of leading Boksburg’s coaching structures into a new era.

“We want to restore the Owls’ pride, rebuild our culture, and get this club competing at the top again,” he said.

His ambitions are bold, and he makes no attempt to hide them. He aims to rebuild a strong senior squad, push for a league title in 2026, and guide the club back into the Peregrine League in 2027.
A renewed sense of community spirit is central to the plan.

“This has always been a family club. We want supporters back at the field, families enjoying Saturdays together, and children running around the posts. That energy is what fuels club rugby.”

A talented crop of younger players has already followed Howell back to the Owls, joined by seasoned Boksburg veterans eager to help revive the club’s legacy.

To strengthen the foundations, Howell is building a coaching team rooted in Boksburg culture, including the return of Danie Schultz as forwards coach and Willie Meyer as backline coach.

Howell said, “They are true Owls. They understand what this badge means.”
