Witfield father, son share about their four-wheel project

Golf 3 making inroads.

Witfield petrolhead duo Linton and son Jodian O’Connor imparted their experience and journey through the years building what Linton dubs a father-son project: a 1994 Volkswagen Golf MK3.

The Advertiser visited the pair at their home in Witfield on April 21 as they took us through the successes the car, which is owned by Jodian, has brought since its new look.

According to Linton, it took approximately eight years to give the car the look it has today, from the interior to the exterior.
Explaining what brought about the idea to start the project, Linton, whose father was a mechanic and thus exposed him to cars, said: “It’s a father and son project. We’ve built the car to enjoy it.

“There are so many children falling prey to drugs and becoming addicts to things on the streets, ending up in jail and just getting themselves involved in things not suitable for children.

“It’s about what I’ve learned from my dad to incorporate it into my son’s life and to build character in him as well.
“For us, it’s a proudly kasi (township) initiative. It’s what we’ve learned in the kasi, in our neighbourhood with our hands from our dads and this car is what we’ve incorporated it into.”

The car has been featured in Showtime Magazine, Speed and Sound, Tyres and Braaiers and Kasi Car Culture show as well as Ignition TV.
“There was a motoring show in Europe recently where they also featured Jodian’s car on a video. The car is being recognised far and wide and that for us is love.”
The car’s symbolic yellow appearance is inspired by its owner’s love for dairy snack Ultra Mel.

It’s earned Jodian, who’s also a Ferrari and BMW fanatic, a first-place win during a 2020 VW Campfest in the junior category, a first place at the Stance Invasion show – also in the junior category, as well as a respectful eighth-place finish out of 140 cars during a Toyz for Boyz competition. More accolades include the car given the Best Interior award at Boggs Stance.

Jodian’s best features of his MK3 include the colour, rims and leather seats.

Linton also paid tribute to the following sponsors who helped with the car facelift: Shield Car Care (Apex); Mag Magic (Boksburg); AutoToro, Feffer Customs and Potent Audio.
