Why juicing is good for your teen
A plate of broccoli or whole apple isn't very appealing for most teens, so try shaking things up with a glass of fruit and veggie juice.
We all know that teenagers need to eat lots of fresh fruit and veggies. Six portions a day is frequently mentioned as the recommended dose. However, for many teens, eating six portions sounds like way too much hard work.
The good news is that juicing makes reaching the recommended dose easy. Juicers come in many shapes and sizes and cost anywhere between a few hundred and a few thousand rands. Some of those who juice choose only fruit. Others choose only vegetables. Many parents choose a mixture of fruit and veg for their kids. A typical combo might consist of a pear, a peach, an orange, an apple, a carrot and a stick of celery or a beetroot. This will produce a large, delicious and healthy glass of juice for your child. And it will cover your child’s fresh fruit and veg needs for the whole day.
A few words of warning
- Remove hard pips before feeding the fruit into your juicer. Peach, apricot, and mango pips are almost bound to destroy your juicer.
- Some fruits are too ‘gooey’ and may clog your juicer. Pears just pass the test as do small portions of mango. Bananas fail the test.
