Two nabbed in Boksburg with illegal firearms linked to Cash-in-Transit Heist
Officers also discovered a correctional services uniform, raising further concerns about possible impersonation or links to organised criminal activity.
A coordinated law enforcement operation has led to the arrest of two men in Vosloorus (Boksburg) after officers uncovered illegal firearms and ammunition allegedly linked to a recent cash-in-transit (CIT) heist. The suspects, aged 36 and 41, were apprehended on Friday, 24 April, following intelligence-driven investigations into the robbery.

According to EMPD spokesperson, Kelebogile Thepa, officers from the EMPD’s Community Liaison Unit (CLU), working in collaboration with the SAPS Highway Patrol Unit and the Hawks, acted on information that the suspects were attempting to sell an assault rifle concealed in a wheelie bin. This led them to Goma Street, where the first suspect was located and questioned.
The suspect reportedly admitted to selling the rifle for R500 and cooperated with officers by leading them to the alleged buyer.
“The operation then moved to the Vosloorus hostel, where the second suspect was located. A search of the premises uncovered a cache of weapons and ammunition hidden under a mattress, including an R5 rifle, a black Norinco Star pistol, two magazines, and 66 rounds of live ammunition,” explained Thepa.
Officers also discovered a correctional services uniform, raising further concerns about possible impersonation or links to organised criminal activity.

While the second suspect produced a valid license for the pistol, he admitted to failing to store the firearm in a legally compliant safe. He also reportedly confirmed purchasing the rifle from the first suspect.
Both men were arrested and are currently being held at the Vosloorus Police Station. They face charges including theft, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and failure to safely store a firearm in accordance with the law. They are expected to appear soon in the Vosloorus Magistrate’s Court.
Communities across the city continue to grapple with a surge in violent crime, as illegal mining turf wars, taxi-related conflicts, drug-related gang violence, and armed robberies intensify fears among residents.
Residents and community leaders are calling for intensified policing, stronger intelligence-driven operations, and greater community involvement to help break the cycle of violence threatening the safety and stability of the area.
