Brakpan heavyweight eyes SA title

Potgieter was confident that he would take revenge and beat Gomes.

In March 2022, Brakpan’s Shaun Potgieter was stopped in the first round of his heavyweight encounter with Keaton Gomes on the undercard of the Heavyweight Mania Box and Dine Tournament at Emperors Palace.

Gomes subsequently went on to become the SA and ABU heavyweight champion by beating Chris Thompson in December 2022 and then outclassed Josh “The Red Beast” Pretorius in May last year to become the first man in many years to successfully defend his SA heavyweight title.

Potgieter, who is probably in the best shape of his life having lost 30kg since that first-round loss to Gomes two years ago, will be looking for revenge tonight (Friday) when he challenges the champion on the undercard of the Power House Box and Dine tournament at the Palace of Dreams.

Potgieter and Gomes were both in a confident mood when they attended a pre-fight press conference and weigh-in at the Palace of Dreams on Tuesday ahead of this evening’s big clash.

In the headline bout of the Power House bill, South Africa’s IBO World Junior Bantamweight champion Ricardo Malajika will defend his title against Marcel Braithwaite of the UK.
