Change of plans for Brakpan Rugby Club

The local side will face Roodepoort in a friendly this weekend.

The build-up to the start of the rugby season has not gone without hassle.

Brakpan Rugby Club was supposed to host Sasolburg this Saturday in the Presidents Cup but they have had to change plans as the visitors could not put a team together for the match. Fortunately, the local club will still be in action as they will face Roodepoort in a friendly.

“Roodepoort stepped up and we are grateful for that,” said Brakpan’s vice-chairperson Sarel Korf.

Local fans will have an opportunity to see the club at Bosman Stadium. They will be looking to be entertained by the club with its new head coach Regardt Botha.

Brakpan has already shown signs of brilliance this year when they beat Benoni (41-0) and Meyerton (14-10).

“There are a lot of possible combinations during the season. I know these are not the teams we will face in the Valke Peregrine League but the matches gave the coaches an opportunity to test out the different combinations on the field,” said Korf.

This match also presents an opportunity for people to get a look at the clean-up work that has been done in and around Bosman Stadium.

The club has worked alongside the community to clean the areas around the grounds.

“It’s amazing what is happening now. It’s not me, it’s the community. It’s the people and it’s the sponsors.

“One must always honour the people in the community that play a part. It’s also the club’s committee,” said the club’s marketing director, Frikkie Bosman.

One of the things the club wants to do is bring back crowds to the stadium. The improvements in the area may help with that. The fans, however, will also want to see a winning team.

“We are planning to be among the top 20 clubs in the country,” said Bosman.

While Saturday’s friendly may not necessarily lead to a top 20 spot, a good performance will go a long way to earning confidence within the team and among fans.
