Brakpan illegal mining raid nets 22 suspects, equipment
SAPS, SANDF and private security teams joined forces in a major operation at Sallies Village.
A joint operation targeting illegal mining in the Brakpan area on August 14 resulted in several arrests and the confiscation of suspected illegal mining equipment.
The multidisciplinary operation was conducted by Ekurhuleni District SAPS and Brakpan SAPS members, SAPS crime intelligence unit members, Public Order Policing Services members, SANDF members, Amapogo private security members, Quartro private security members, and DRD Asset Protection members.
“The operation forms part of a broader national strategy to counter the increasingly organised and violent nature of illegal mining networks, commonly known as “zama-zama” operations,” said Constable Audrey Buthelezi, Brakpan SAPS social crime prevention and communications officer.
“These networks operate in abandoned or disused mining shafts and are often linked to organised crime, illegal immigration, weapon trafficking, and violent territorial disputes.”

The operation, held in the vicinity of the Ergo mining site in Sallies Village, resulted in the arrest of 22 people.
“Eighty-three items were confiscated, including spades, water pumps, pendukas, gas bottles, picks and generators. Alcohol, including beer and vodka, found at the illegal mining sites were also confiscated,” said Buthelezi.
“All exhibits were booked in as per SAPS 13 register, and the suspects were detained at the Brakpan Police Station.”
Buthelezi stated the successful operation stabilised the high-crime area and prevented further criminal activities.

“The operation further disrupted criminal networks linked to illegal mining activities to dismantle organised crime,” she said.
“The multidisciplinary operation also proves strength in law enforcement capabilities of effectively combating illegal mining and associated crimes.
“By implementing a comprehensive operational approach, the SAPS enhances effectiveness to combat illegal mining effectively.
“The SAPS will continue conducting these disruptive operations until illegal mining activities within the Brakpan precinct are permanently eradicated.”
