Wounded suspect dies in hospital

A 36-year old suspect, who was wounded during a shoot-out with the police, died in hospital, on Friday.

The man was arrested with three others, after a business robbery on Voortrekker Road, on June 9. (Police arrest four robbers after chase, Herald July 14).

The four men allegedly entered a shop at about 8.30am and inquired about the cost of certain goods.

According to police, one of them produced a firearm and pointed it at the complainant. He also hit the complainant over the head with the weapon.

The robbers then took cash, airtime and more than 100 cellular phones, before they fled the scene in a white Volkswagen Polo.

Police gave chase and the suspects eventually got out of their vehicle on the corner of Kingfisher Avenue and Barry Marais Road, in Boksburg, in an attempt to flee.

The fleeing robbers shot at the police, who returned fire. The deceased suspect was wounded in the back and taken to a local hospital.

Kapt Joep Joubert, spokesperson for the Brakpan SAPS, said a post mortem investigation will be conducted,to determine the exact cause of death.

The other three suspects, aged 30, 37 and 42, face charges of armed robbery, attempted murder, being in possession of suspected stolen property and being in possession of unlicensed firearms.

They appeared in the Brakpan Magistrates Court on Monday and Tuesday, for bail applications.

At the time of going to press the outcome was not known.
