WATCH: Blak Bash tests athletes’ limits and fitness

The annual Blak Bash fitness competition saw athletes brave extreme heat for ultimate bragging rights and fitness community.

The annual Blak Bash, a Blak Fitness Circle event organised by Astrid Walters-Girout, took place in the sweltering heat on October 31, on the rugby field of Hoërskool Stoffberg.

“This event once again brought athletes together for a day filled with adrenaline, determination, teamwork and plenty of fun!” Walters-Girout said.

The event is a functional fitness competition designed to challenge athletes physically and mentally, focusing on four essential elements of fitness: strength, endurance, cardiovascular fitness, and teamwork.

“What makes Blak Bash special is that athletes compete in teams of two, so it’s not just about how strong or fit an individual is, but also about how well two teammates can support, motivate and work together when pressure mounts,” she explained.

The competition consisted of three events, each with its own purpose and challenges. Workout one focused on communication and synchronisation, testing athletes’ ability to work together as a unit.

With various functional movements, such as push-ups, lunges, box jumps, jump rope, and others, participants had to complete repetitions in synchronisation using clear communication and support.

Workout two, a weight-lifting challenge, was about raw strength and determination. The movements included clean lifts and deadlifts, requiring technique, concentration and determination on top of the strength.

Workout three focused on cardiovascular fitness and endurance, including running exercises and the assault bike, pushing athletes’ cardiovascular capacity and endurance to the limit.

The event is about much more than medals, podium finishes and personal achievements, and aims to build community through sport, friendships and encouragement.

“The support of spectators, family, friends, sponsors, judges and volunteers plays a significant role in making this event a success.

“We believe that fitness is not just about exercise, but about developing self-confidence, discipline, health, and a strong sense of community,” Walters-Girout said.
