Learners debate HIV and teen pregnancy
Research by the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that youngsters between the ages of 15 and 24 years make up just over one quarter of the sexually active population, but account for half of the 20-million new sexually transmitted infections.

In a bid to turn the tide on infections and unwanted pregnancies amongst its youth, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality has provided a platform for teens to educate each other through the High School Public Speaking Competition, which will be held at the Springs Civic Centre tomorrow (Friday).
Knock-out stages began on February 6, when learners from every corner of Ekurhuleni debated their points under the topic “Striving towards Zero HIV, TB, STI and unwanted pregnancy is a shared responsibility”.
“The month of February is Reproductive Health Awareness Month and, as the City of Ekurhuleni, we have chosen to observe it in this way,” said metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe.
“Furthermore, Friday is Valentine’s Day and keeping our youth’s minds preoccupied with research will make them more aware of risks associated with being sexually active at an early age.”
