Share some warmth

There's a chill in the air -- a sign of the bitter cold days and nights that lie ahead as winter looms.

Many residents will start digging out last winter’s jerseys and jackets, hot water bottles, electric blankets and other warm and cozy covers.

For many others, however, this will not be the case.

With this in mind, the Herald is, this week, launching our annual Winter Woollies Collection project.

The project, which the Herald has run for the past eight years, is greatly appreciated by the benefactors, who treasure a blanket and a pair of warm socks to shield them from the cold.

As in the past, the Herald aims to collect as many blankets, socks, woollen hats, gloves and scarves as possible, and to distribute them to various welfare organisations in Brakpan.

In most households there is an extra blanket or two, forgotten about and packed away in a cupboard.

These blankets, as well as a snug pair of socks, could ensure someone less fortunate a warm night’s sleep.

New and knitted socks, hats, gloves and scarves, or any old blankets in a good, clean condition, will be accepted.

It is not necessary to purchase new blankets, although these will be most welcome.

The Herald politely requests that residents do not donate clothing.

Items can be delivered to the Herald’s office, at 25 Hendrik Potgieter Street, in Dalview.

For those residents who want to support the project, but are unable to visit the Herald’s office during working hours, donations can also be made at VC SuperSpar, in Dalview.

A box for donations has been placed inside the store, which is situated along Craigholm Street.

“This project is well supported by the community and we are happy to be involved again this year,” said Heindrich Beytendag, manager at VC SuperSpar.
