According to Capt Joep Joubert, spokesperson for the Brakpan Police Station commander, station management have received disturbing reports of local officers demanding the payment of “spot fines” for traffic violations and other offences.
“It is a bribe, plain and simple,” said Joubert, further stating that if the person doesn’t have the full amount of money wanted, the officers negotiate the price of the fine.
Joubert advised residents who find themselves in this situation to take down the officer’s name, the vehicle’s registration number and call sign and, if possible, to take a photograph of the offender.
The call sign is usually made up of two letters and two numbers, and can be found on the side of the vehicle.
It is also important to note the date, time and place of the incident.
“This is vital, as each police vehicle is fitted with a tracking device,” said Joubert.
“If the vehicle can be traced to that location on that date and at that time, we can take action.”
He also advised residents who are stopped and asked to pay a spot fine, to simply refuse and request a written notice.
“If you pay these bribes, you are just as guilty, and we condemn all forms of corruption,” he added.
Residents who have fallen victim to corrupt police members are welcome to meet with station management.
