Alcohol-blitz yields 10 arrests

In an attempt to combat drunk driving, the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department held a special alcohol-blitz operation, on Friday evening, last week.

The operation, which included roving roadblocks, stop and searches, and high visibility patrols, was conducted in the Brakpan and Nigel areas.

“Ten drivers suspected of drinking and driving were nabbed, including one who caused an accident due to her state of inebriety,” said EMPD spokesperson Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago.

One person was arrested in Brakpan, two in Tsakane and seven in Duduza.

“Over and above the arrests, 61 spot summonses were issued for various offences, including documentation, moving violations and defects,” said Kgasago.

Cases of suspected drunken driving were registered at the respective police stations and the arrested motorists face charges of suspected drunken driving.
