This is not the place to take your unwanted pets
The Christian Praise Centre, in Brenthurst, is experiencing an influx of cats and dogs being dumped on their doorstep.
The centre, which is situated along Muriel Brand Street, provides a home for abused and neglected women and children, and also cares for and rehabilitates the less fortunate.
According to Sue de Jongh, from the centre, abandoned kittens and puppies are a regular occurrence.
“We are just not coping with how many animals are thrown over our fences or dumped in the neighbouring veld,” she said.
De Jongh told the Herald that this problem has quickly resulted in a feral cat colony in the area.
“There is a large number of cats living in the veld just behind us,” she said.
“These cats and other animals often stray onto the centre’s property in search of food.
“We’re not quite sure why people are dumping these animals here, but we obviously can’t keep them.”
In January, last year, the Herald reported how a Christian Praise Centre resident saved a cat from certain death, after a man tried to throw the feline down an open mine shaft in the veld.
“I asked him what he was doing and he told me he was getting rid of a cat and some kittens,” said Francois Strydom at the time.
“The kittens had already been thrown into the shaft, but I took the cat.”
The Brakpan SPCA has appealed to residents not to dump their unwanted pets.
“If you can no longer care for your pets, please don’t just dump them,” said Tanisha Fourie, from the local society.
Residents are requested to surrender unwanted animals to the SPCA, where they can receive proper care.
The Brakpan SPCA even has a kennel in which animals can be surrendered after hours.
The SPCA is situated at 96 Denne Road, Withok, and can be contacted on 011 742 2007.
