Hijacker who can’t drive flees on foot

A would-be hijacker failed to steal a car, because he couldn't drive it.

The man had attempted to hijack a white Toyota Corolla, in Witpoortjie, on Saturday.

According to information received from Brakpan police, the car’s male driver (39) had met the man earlier that morning, at the Mall@Carnival, when the man had helped him to pawn a television set.

The driver had gone to the mall at about 10am to withdraw cash and had met the man in the parking lot, en route back to his vehicle.

He told the man he wanted to sell his television, and the man offered to show him the way to a nearby pawn shop.

The pair visited the shop and, after pawning the television set, the driver gave the man R5 to thank him.

The man then asked the driver for a lift to Brakpan, to which the driver agreed.

While travelling along Springs Road, the man suddenly pulled out a black firearm, pointed it at the driver and instructed him to get out.

The driver alighted the vehicle and the man attempted to make his get-away, but failed to drive the car.

The would-be hijacker then helped himself to the driver’s cellphone, as well as R10 000 from the vehicle’s cubbyhole.

He got out of the car and fled on foot.

Brakpan police are investigating a case of robbery with a firearm.

In a separate incident, on Sunday, a 27-year-old Dalpark man was robbed of his white Nissan MP200 bakkie, along Louw Street.

The man and his girlfriend (age unknown) were travelling from Boksburg at about 6.30pm, when they realised the bakkie had a flat tyre.

The man pulled over and was changing the tyre, when a white Toyota Avanza stopped alongside them.

“The Avanza had two male occupants, one of whom climbed out of the car and inquired whether the man required any assistance,” said Capt Joep Joubert, spokesperson for the Brakpan Police Station commander.

“The other occupant then climbed out and pointed a firearm at the man, who had just tightened the last wheel-nut.

“The hijacker pushed him aside and ordered his girlfriend out of the bakkie.

“The hijacker then climbed into the vehicle and drove off, while the other suspect got back into the Avanza and drove away.”
