Foodbank to feed hundreds
Fewer people will be going to bed on an empty stomach in Ekurhuleni, thanks to the Springs Fresh Produce Market Foodbank, that was launched by the Ekurhuleni Metro, on Friday, last week.
The Market’s Steve Ramoshaba said the reason for starting the Foodbank is to alleviate hunger through donations of fruit and vegetables to non-profit organisations (NPO).
“Currently, 1 600 beneficiaries benefit from the Foodbank,” said Ramoshaba. The idea came as a result of availability of surplus seasonal fruit and vegetables within the market, which sometimes are discarded if not bought within a specified period of time.”
In making a difference in residents’ lives, however, the Foodbank has challenges of transport and budget limitations.
“We would, therefore, like to strengthen this process and expand to other areas and at least double the number of beneficiaries to 3 000,” Ramoshabo added.
Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for City Planning and Economic Development Thumbu Mahlangu said he was proud to see that the Foodbank was playing its part in assisting the destitute.
“I would like to appeal to those who are involved in the distribution process to not take these items to your homes for your benefit, as these donations must be given to those who rely on them to live,” he said.
