Brakpan residents recognised at Peermont awards

Peermont proudly celebrated the work conducted within the local communities surrounding its various units, at a prestigious awards gala dinner, at Emperors Palace, on Tuesday evening, last week.

The inception of the awards, dubbed ”the Oscars” of the CSI world, celebrated and recognised the hard working people who make Peermont CSI community projects a success, and included Brakpan educators Gerhard Brits and Adri Croucamp, and Lesedi Skills Programme graduate Castro Maila, of Tsakane.

Each year, Peermont contributes millions of Rand — over R24-million in 2014 — to the communities surrounding their business units.

The Peermont CSI programme consists of four pillars and projects are recognised under each of the following pillars: Education, Youth Development, Environment Enrichment and Entrepreneurial Enrichment.

Brits was recognised for his dedication to education when he received a long service award at the dinner.

He was acknowledged for his decade-long involvement with the Star Schools Project in Springs, a programme supported by the Peermont Children’s Trust (PCT), a CSI initiative of Emperors Palace.

As the Star School Project coordinator, Brits, who is also the principal of Pinegrove Primary School, in Springs, was instrumental in setting up the project and forging successful relationships with all the high schools in KwaThema, Springs, Daveyton, and all the surrounding areas.

During his tenure he maintained a learner attendance record of over 90 per cent, and a 100 per cent attendance record for educators; a remarkable achievement and an incredible testament to his project management skills, considering learners and teachers attend classes on a Saturday.

It is also worth noting that, from 2010 to 2014, 99.4 per cent of learners sponsored by Peermont (about 250 a year) achieved a university exemption pass and 119 distinctions were achieved in mathematics, physical science and English, at Grade 12 level.
