Refuse collection will resume as strike is over
Employees of the Waste Management Services Department who have been on strike, have resumed work.
The Herald reported last week about the frustration of the residents of the town whose refuse had not been collected on a regular basis.
When the Herald asked the Metro for comment regarding the situation the spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM), Themba Gadebe, confirmed that the workforce at the Brakpan Waste Management Services depot embarked on a strike because management was not prepared to implement their overtime demands without determining the cost implication thereof in relation to the value it would add.
On Monday Gadebe said that following a meeting, held on Thursday, August 27, with shop stewards the workers agreed to resume work on August 28.
“They worked on Saturday to catch up some of the backlog, and are continuing with their rounds as scheduled on Monday. It is expected that the backlog will be eradicated by Thursday,” said Gadebe.
“Meanwhile management is attending to the labour issues that have been raised together with the unions and the EMM’s Labour Relations Department,” added Gadebe.
