Dalpark Community Policing Forum to the rescue
Members of the Dalpark Community Policing Forum came to the rescue when a large 18-wheeler truck broke down across the intersection of Airport Drive and Snake Road, shortly after 5pm on Friday afternoon.
It was a recipe for disaster for hundreds of motorists on a Friday afternoon, at the end of the month and in peak hour traffic.
The broken down vehicle reduced the flow from Brakpan and blocked one lane of traffic coming off the N17 highway.
Traffic lights, although working, had motorists completely confused as everyone wanted to move and the limited available space made it extremely difficult.
“The Dalpark/Dalpark Extension Five Community Policing Forum stepped into the breach and started directing the traffic, which had built up in all directions,” said the public relations officer for the CPF, Brian Welby-Cooke.
“This successfully diffused the growing aggravation of commuters wanting to get to their destinations after a hard week in the office.”
Before the intervention of the Dalpark CPF, tempers were reaching boiling point and traffic rules were being broken with enthusiasm.
“The CPF stepped in with three of their members at around 7.50pm and their numbers increased to six members by 8.10pm,” said Welby-Cooke.
“We controlled the flow of traffic so well that motorists who had not been moving at all were granted the chance to get through the intersection with a lot less stress and aggravation.”
Two rain showers did not dampen the enthusiasm and the CPF members stuck to the task on hand.
“We stayed on duty until the broken down truck was eventually removed at about 9.10pm and the traffic flow returned to normal,” explained Welby-Cooke.
“The dedication of the Dalpark CPF members, who do regular patrols during the day and night in their area, has now shown that not only do we help our own community with patrolling to minimise break-ins and crime in general, but we also step up to the plate when others need our services.”
