JASMIN-LEE UPDATE: ‘This was not a sexual interaction, but rather an act of brutality and violence’

Sarel du Toit, uncle of the four-year-old Jasmin-Lee Pretorius who raped and murdered her on December 28, 2013 has been sentenced to two terms of life imprisonment.

Sentencing Du Toit, Judge Mahomed Ismail described what Du Toit did as evil, horrendous and lacking any human compassion. So reported Ilse de Lange, The Citizen.

Du Toit admitted that he had fetched the little girl from her room and then raping and strangling her to stop her from making any noise.

He then hid her body under his bed and denied any knowledge of her whereabouts for yours while her family frantically searched for her.

“… Confirming the plea of guilty and noting the admissions he made had a chilling effect on me and the core of my person was shattered by the brutality.

“…I’m amazed at the brutality of his actions. More so because the victim was his niece,” he said.

The Judge said rape on young children were more usually committed by people they knew and trusted. This was because young children were trusting of their elders and were not even suspicious of deviant behaviour.

“…This was not a sexual interaction, but rather an act of brutality and violence.

“…Your actions nipped the flame of life of a defenceless child. You violated her dignity for your own self-gratification,” he said.
