The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality is lifting water restrictions which were executed last month to curb the water shortages experienced throughout the province.

Cooperation by residents and business consumers, as well as the advent of seasonal rainfall, which has cooled temperatures, have ensured that reservoirs remain stable over the past weeks.

“Reservoir levels are currently operating above 70 per cent and  we are in a position to lift the total ban on irrigation and filling of swimming pools,” said Ekurhuleni spokesperson Themba Gadebe.

“Instead we will be implementing time-bound restrictions whereby no irrigation activities should take place between 8am and 4pm,” he continued.

Gadebe, however, cautioned consumers to remain active partners in water conservation and to utilise the scarce resource sparingly.

“Although the situation has improved, we still urge residents to abide by water conservation measures such as refraining from utilising hose pipes to water their gardens, wash their cars and paved outdoor areas, especially between 8am and 4pm,” he said.

Consumers are also urged to repair leaks on their properties, and report those that require the municipality’s attention to the municipal services call centre number on 086 054 3000.
