POLICE ALERT – A must-read for all who travel on the N17 highway

Motorists urged to be vigilant of their surroundings at all times.

Local police have warned motorists travelling along the N17 highway to be vigilant following reports of robbers operating near the Brakpan off-ramp (Heidelberg Road).

According to Capt Joep Joubert, spokesperson for the Brakpan Police Station commander, a 38-year-old motorist was robbed of his cellphone by three men on Friday evening, last week.

He told the Herald this was the second case, in which the same modus operandi was employed, to be reported to the police in as many weeks.

“The motorist was stationary at the traffic lights, at 6.10pm, when he saw a man walking in between the cars,” said Joubert.

“The man passed by the motorist’s car, stopped and suddenly started hitting the bonnet.

“The motorist opened his window to ask the man what he was doing, when two men appeared at his side and a gun was pointed at him.

“The men demanded the cellphone that was on his lap, which the motorist handed over.”

Joubert urged motorists to be vigilant of their surroundings at all times and warned that drivers who are easily distracted are viewed as easy targets by criminals.

He also pleaded with motorists to keep their valuables, such as cellphones, laptops and handbags, out of sight when travelling.

Suspicious-looking people, vehicles and activities in this area can be reported to the sector police on 071 675 6960/61.
