Fighting crime together

A yellow Jonway scooter, suspected to be stolen, was found in the trolley.

It’s the perfect example of the community and police working together.

A suspected thief was arrested on Friday morning, last week, thanks to the combined efforts of a vigilant resident and two dedicated local police officers.

Shortly before 5am on Friday morning, resident Jonathan Cunha was on his way home from work when he saw two men pushing a home-made trolley along Elliot Avenue.

Cunha, who is a member of the Brakpan Radio Group, noticed that the men were trying to conceal something large in the trolley, which was covered by canvas.

As he made a U-turn to have another look, the two men ran off.

Cunha then signalled a passing Brakpan SAPS patrol vehicle, and the two vehicles gave chase.

With the assistance of Cunha, Constables Reginald Mandlane and Geoffrey Matemotsa were able to apprehend one of the men.

A yellow Jonway scooter, suspected to be stolen, was found in the trolley.

Capt Joep Joubert, spokesperson for the Brakpan Police Station Commander, told the Herald that police need the community’s help to fight against crime.

“We cannot work alone and this shows what can be done when we work together,” he said.
