‘Hectic night shift made me do it’

Speedsters expected to appear in court soon.

Six drivers were caught doing well over the prescribed speed limit of 100km/h along the R23, in Brakpan, on Saturday morning.

The speedsters were nabbed by the EMPD.

The highest registered speed was by a 35-year-old male driver in a BMW sedan arrested at 6.22am for doing 159km/h.

The man claimed he was late for a funeral.

“The BMW driver was also found to be driving drunk,” said EMPD spokesperson Lieut-Col Wilfred Kgasago.

The second highest speed was at 6.20am by a 24-year-old male driver, also in a BMW sedan.

He clocked 146km/h citing the reason of rushing home to rest following a hectic night shift.

“Between 5.56am and 6.34am two drivers were caught doing 143km/h – one in a Toyota sedan and the other in a Hyundai sedan – both advancing reasons of rushing to work,” said Kgasago.

“The sixth driver was a female arrested when clocked at 142km/h at 6.39am giving the reason that she was rushing to a hospital.

“All six suspects were detained at the Brakpan Police Station where they were charged with reckless and negligent driving and later released after posting bail of R1 000 each.”

They are expected to appear in court soon.
