City commemorates Youth Month

Over 10 000 young people are expected to attend the 40th Youth Uprising Music Festival.

The City of Ekurhuleni joins the country in commemorating the 40th anniversary of the 1976 Soweto Youth Uprising through an intense programme of activities.

To kick-start the programme, the City will this week play host to the third Brics Youth International Forum at the Birchwood Conference Centre.

It is on this platform, which runs until Saturday, that the mayor will outline how young people can seize economic opportunities presented by the Aerotropolis.

On Sunday, June 12, young people are invited to participate in the 4-10km liberation fun walk set to start at Sam Ntuli Stadium and proceed down Khumalo Street in Thokoza, from 8am in the morning.

Mayor Mondli Gungubele will also host the Youth Excellent Awards at Germiston Civic Centre on Saturday, June 18, to recognise youth excellence and activism in social development, sports, business and life skills.

For more fun and festivities, over 10 000 young people are expected to attend the 40th Youth Uprising Music Festival on June 25 at Germiston Lake Park.

To conclude the youth month activities, youth in business will meet at the Change Bible Church in Katlehong on June 28 and 29 for a business expo to share best business practices.
