Stolen car recovered after shoot-out in Brenthurst, suspect arrested
Police also recovered a firearm and two cellphones.
Brakpan police recovered a stolen vehicle following a shoot-out with two suspected car thieves in Brenthurst, yesterday (Wednesday).
The vehicle was reported stolen in September, last year, in Honeydew.
According to Capt Joep Joubert, spokesperson for the Brakpan Police Station commander, the vehicle – a white Volkswagen Polo GT – was spotted at about 9.30am by patrolling Sector Police members in the parking area of a supermarket in the Brakpan CBD.
“The number plate was skew, which aroused suspicion,” said Joubert.
“The members then saw two suspects getting into the car.
“The suspects then sped off in the direction of Brenthurst.”
Joubert told the Herald the driver of the Polo lost control of the vehicle along Fifeshire Road, after colliding with a heap of soil.
“The suspects got out of the vehicle to try and flee on foot and fired shots at the police members,” said Joubert.
“The members returned fire and one suspect was wounded in the abdomen.
“He was transferred to a local hospital in a serious condition, while the second suspect managed to get away.”
In addition to the car, police also recovered a firearm and two cellphones.
The serial number on the gun had been filed off.
“Brakpan police are investigating,” added Joubert.
