Youth pledge responsibility on sexual health matters

“ When we see you, we are convinced that indeed education is the key to success in all areas of our lives.”

For every constitutional right comes a set of responsibilities.

This was the unanimous declaration by bright young minds at the Ekurhuleni Public Speaking Competition held for high school learners , in Alberton, last week.

The competition’s debate topic was: “Comprehensive, Sexual Reproduction Health Rights and Responsibilities in Schools.”

Learners used the occasion to present robust arguments on the subject.

Lindokuhle Mathebula, a Grade 12 learner from Mamelong Comprehensive High School, in Tsakane, stole the show, exhibiting unparalleled argument on the topic.

As the fourth speaker of the day, Mathebula’s argument centred on extensive sexual health education in schools and communities as a tool to address the scourge of sexual health ills.

According to Mathebula, comprehensive sexual health education will reduce risky behaviour amongst school-going children.

“The advantages of sexual health education is its inherent ability to dispel myths on sexual health matters such as to say sleeping with a virgin cures AIDS,” she said.

Ekurhuleni’s Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Community Services, Clr Dora Mlambo, commended the young people for the amount of work invested in their presentations.

“The level of confidence you display when you ascend the stage to the robustness in your arguments only proves that the future of this country is in good hands,” she said.

“As the City we are proud to have intelligent young people in the community.

“ When we see you, we are convinced that indeed education is the key to success in all areas of our lives.”

Mlambo further congratulated the top achievers and all participants.

The MMC expressed gratitude to educators for equipping learners with skills to be highly competitive.
