A 29-year-old man who robbed a shop in the Brakpan CBD at gunpoint was recently sentenced to 20 years in jail.
James Mlambo robbed the Voortrekker Road outlet on the afternoon of July 14, 2015, and stole cash, clothing fabric and zips.
A swift response by employees from neighbouring shops and an off-duty police officer, Det Const Njabulo Ndlovu, resulted in Mlambo’s arrest.
He was found guilty on charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of an unlicensed firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.
Mlambo, who appeared in the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court for sentencing earlier this month, received a 15-year imprisonment term for the robbery, six years for possession of an unlicensed firearm and two years for the unlawful possession of ammunition.
He was sentenced to an effective term of 20 years imprisonment, in terms of Section 280 (2) of the Criminal Procedure Act, No 51 of 1977.
Mlambo was also declared unfit to possess a firearm and it was further recommended that when he is due for release, his legality in South Africa be investigated and deportation considered.
The investigating officer in the case was Det Sgt Sibusiso Xaba.
