Everywhere for everyone
The Brakpan Red Cross spent World Red Cross Day on Monday serving the youth.
The local chapter spent the morning at the Tsakane Therapy Centre, which provides daily care for children with physical and intellectual disabilities.
Staff from the Brakpan Red Cross arrived at the centre laden with a generous donation of food, blankets, toys, books, tables, chairs and other essential items.
The centre’s children were thrilled to have visitors and smiled warmly at the guests, who arrived just in time to help with breakfast.
Situated along Ndaba Street, near the Pholosong Hospital, the centre was established in February last year.
It is managed by Mandla Gxowa, who is passionate about his work and the children he helps.
Thirty-six children and young adults between the ages of two and 21 – eight of whom are permanent residents – attend the centre on a daily basis.
Eighteen volunteers ensure the centre runs effectively day and night.
The centre does not receive any government support and relies solely on donations.
“We wanted to reach out to children on World Red Cross Day, so we’re happy to spend some time at the centre,” said Brakpan Red Cross manager Collen Huma.
World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day is an annual celebration of the principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
The day is celebrated on May 8, the anniversary of the birth of Henry Dunant (born 1828), the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the recipient of the first Nobel Peace Prize.
The theme for this year’s World Cross Day was “Everywhere for Everyone”.
