Weekend crime round-up

According to information received, the following crimes were reported to Brakpan police over the weekend:

• Friday – The occupants of a house along Springs Road, in Maryvlei, were robbed by three men.

The victims were sitting on the veranda at around 10.20pm when they saw the trio enter the yard.

One of the robbers was armed with a crowbar, while another had a firearm.

The gunman fired one shot and instructed the victims to go inside the house.

They were told to lie on the floor and the robbers searched them.

The robbers fled with cash and household items.

* Three TVs, a portable DVD player and a tablet were stolen from a home along Taft Avenue.

* Two women were robbed along Heidelberg Road (R23), near Withok Estates, when they stopped on the roadside to put water in their car.

The driver pulled over at around 6.30pm after the vehicle’s coolant warning light came on and both women climbed out of the vehicle.

While the driver was pouring water into the radiator, the women noticed two men approaching.

The men walked past, but suddenly turned around and confronted the women.

One of the men pointed a gun at the pair and chased them.

The other man helped himself to a laptop and cellphone in the car.

* Tyres and rims were stolen from a vehicle parked at an address along Lapping Street, in Brenthurst.

* Two taxi commuters were robbed in separate incidents.

There has been a spate of these robberies in Brakpan, which sees commuters being assaulted and robbed by five occupants of a white Toyota Quantum.

The first victim was picked up near Carnival City at around 10am.

He was struck through the face and robbed of his belt, shoes and cellphone.

The victim was then pushed from the vehicle.

About an hour later, the second victim boarded the taxi, also near Carnival City.

This victim was robbed of his belt, wristwatch, shoes, pants, shirt, cellphone and wallet.

The men threatened to shoot him and demanded the pin number for his bank card.

After being forced out of the taxi, the victim flagged down a passing motorist for help.

The motorist followed the Quantum and three suspects were later arrested by police.

• Saturday – A cellphone shop in Mall@Carnival was robbed by two men at around 9.45am.

One of the robbers walked up to the counter and revealed a firearm to a staff member.

He instructed the staff member to take him to the office at the back of the shop.

The other robber kept watch.

In the office, staff were instructed to open the safe and boxes of stock.

The stock was loaded on a trolley and a staff member was forced to push it out of the shop.

* The body of a man was found in Withok Estates.

* A pedestrian was robbed at the corner of Prince George Avenue and Queen Avenue.

The victim was approached by the robber at around 12.40pm, who asked him for R20.

When the victim declined to give him any money, the robber grabbed a handful of notes from the victim’s pocket and ran off.

* A home in Middle Street, Rand Collieries, was burgled of a TV, duvet cover and a cellphone.

* A man was robbed at a local hotel.

• Sunday – A TV was stolen during a break-in at at an address along Springs Road, in Rand Collieries.

* Tyres and rims were stolen from two vehicles parked along First Road, in Witpoort Estates.

Other cases:

• Thursday – A black and red motorbike (make and model not provided) was stolen from Jones Avenue.
