Brenthurst Primary scoops impressive win at Chris Hani debate tournament
Young learners robustly argued their varying cases.
Brenthurst Primary School topped the charts and scooped trophies in all categories at this year’s instalment of the Chris Hani schools debate tournament.
The tournament, held recently at the Alberton Civic Centre, saw learners from participating schools in Ekurhuleni debating on the life and times of Chris Hani.
Brenthurst Primary Grade Six learner Kutloano Mpitso was the overall best speaker of the tournament.
The debate was simulated to be in line with the United Nations debate model, where the debater has to manage the difficulties in trying to put forward an argument while being constrained by having to adhere to government policy versus personal opinion.
Social ills, racial challenges and access to basic service formed the core of the learners’ debates.
Some of the heated debate sessions for the primary school rounds focused on the Possibility of Changing the Voting Age for all Citizens as a topic.
Young learners robustly argued their varying cases.
Meanwhile, for one of the high school topics learners had to do a simulation focusing on the Inclusion of Other Racial Groups into the African National Congress National Executive Committee.
Willowmoore High School in Benoni won the high school round with over 70 per cent of the points in all categories combined.
