Weekend crime round-up

Four men fled with R3 800 in coins after robbing a motorist along Prince George Avenue.

According to information received, the following crimes were reported to Brakpan police over the weekend:

• Friday – Three would-be hijackers were forced to abandon their plan to steal a Mercedes-Benz after they failed to start the car.

The driver of the Mercedes was stationary at the intersection of Athlone Avenue and Heidelberg Road (R23) in Dalpark at around 6.10am when he was confronted by three occupants of a white Volkswagen Polo.

One of the men was armed with a gun and climbed into the Mercedes.

The victim was instructed to follow the Polo and they drove off.

They later pulled over on the roadside and the victim was taken out of the car and his hands were bound with cable ties.

He was then forced into the backseat of the Mercedes and told to lie down.

The victim was driven to a secluded area and told to get out of the vehicle.

After failing to get the Mercedes started, the men fled with the vehicle’s radio, a pocket knife and the victim’s wallet and bank cards.

A case of armed robbery is under investigation.

* A business in Denne Road, Vulcania, was broken into.

A list of items stolen during the burglary had not been provided to police at the time of publication.

* A home in Voortrekker Road was burgled of a gaming console, a hairdryer and other valuables.

* Four men fled with R3 800 in coins after robbing a motorist along Prince George Avenue.

The victim, who was travelling in an Isuzu bakkie, was approaching the traffic circle in Anzac at about 6pm when a silver Audi Q5 with four male occupants pulled in front of him and attempted to block his path.

A gunman alighted the Audi and pointed a firearm at the victim.

As the victim manoeuvred around the Audi, the gunman fired a shot towards the bakkie.

The victim drove off towards the Brakpan CBD with the Audi in pursuit.

He lost control of the bakkie near the Brakpan Police Station and fled from the vehicle.

One of the robbers smashed the passenger side window of the bakkie and took the coins, which were in two boxes.

• Saturday – No priority cases were reported at the time of publication.

• Sunday – An off-road motorbike was stolen from an address along Van Schoor Street in Brakpan North.

* Electrical outlets, a basin and a door were stolen from a property in Sports Way, Anzac.

* A generator was stolen from a residence in Queen Avenue.

* A woman was robbed of her handbag at the Mall@Carnival.

The incident took place at about 11.30am when the victim was shopping in one of the large retail stores.

A woman, wearing the shop’s uniform, struck up a conversation with the victim about a promotion the store was running for pensioners.

The woman then grabbed the victim’s handbag and ran off.

The handbag contained the victims’ cellphone, bank cards and jewellery.

An amount of R500 was withdrawn from the victim’s bank account.
