False hijacking claim lands woman in cuffs

"It is high time the community respects the time and state resources allocated to the police."

Brakpan police hope the arrest of a woman last week on a charge of perjury will serve as a warning to the community not to lie to police.

The 47-year-old falsely opened a case of hijacking and claimed she was robbed of her vehicle, a white Daihatsu, on November 5.

“The victim reported that she was driving along Lemmer Road in Maryvlei towards Kwa-Thema Square when she received a phone call and pulled over,” said Capt Pearl van Staad, spokesperson for the Brakpan SAPS.

“While busy on the line, a grey Volkswagen Polo stopped behind her. A passenger from the car approached her and greeted her, but she didn’t respond.

“The male took the keys from the ignition, forced her out of the vehicle and then sped off in her vehicle, with the Polo following.

“Inside the vehicle were the registration papers of the vehicle, bank cards, wallet and her driver’s licence. She reported the matter to Brakpan SAPS, where she could not produce the vehicle documentation. That’s how she narrated the matter.”

After being questioned by the Trio Task Team, the woman was arrested on November 9. Van Staad told the Herald the woman orchestrated the story and had in fact pawned the car at a pawn shop for R30 000.

“She further alludes that she owes money to loan sharks and they were attaching some of her belongings,” said the spokesperson.

Brakpan SAPS station commander Brig Fredl Jock thanked the Trio Task Team members for conducting a thorough interview that resulted in the truth being revealed.

“This should serve as a warning and an eye-opener to the community that police will not tolerate any form of wasteful state resources. It is high time the community respects the time and state resources allocated to the police,” added van Staad.
