Police out in full force

Police and other stakeholders swarmed Brakpan for an O Kae Molao operation last week.

Law enforcement gathered in Brakpan last Thursday for an O Kae Molao operation to curb crime.

The operation, also held in commemoration of Child Protection Week, was led by the Gauteng deputy provincial commissioner Major General Tommy Mthombeni, deputy district commissioner Brigadier Lebogang Machakela, provincial heads of departments, Brakpan SAPS station commander Brigadier Fredl Jonck and other station commanders from the Ekurhuleni District.

The day unfolded in eight phases, with the focus areas being a roadblock, vehicle checkpoints, drug enforcement, liquor compliance and enforcement, second-hand goods, illegal mining, high visibility and saturation policing, and school searches.

Sixty-three offenders were arrested during the operation.

The arrests were for dealing in dagga (three), possession of drugs (two), undocumented persons (42), dealing in liquor without a licence (nine) and second-hand goods offences (seven).

Nine fines were issued for non-compliance with the liquor act and alcohol valued at R13 500 was seized. Seven fines were issued to second-hand goods dealers to the value of R17 500.

A scrap metal shop was also closed. In addition, 92 traffic fines valued at R30 700 were issued.

A Toyota Quantum was also discontinued from the road.

Drugs seized by law enforcement on the day included dagga, cat (methcathinone) and crystal meth.

Equipment suspected to be used in illegal mining equipment was confiscated. These items include a water pump, four spades, five picks and a hammer.

Jonck thanked all attendees, including councillors, the NPA, Home Affairs, Bidvest, EMPD, Tracker, Gauteng Traffic Police, CPF, security companies and Department of Community Safety for the continuous support and the working relationship.

“Every effort made doesn’t go unnoticed,” said Brakpan SAPS spokesperson Captain Pearl van Staad.
