Gunman opens fire on father and daughter (2) in car

The child's 34-year-old father still has many unanswered questions.

Shots fired at a vehicle in Dirk van der Hoff Avenue in Rand Collieries on Saturday evening narrowly missed a two-year-old girl who was seated in the back of the car.

The child’s 34-year-old father still has many unanswered questions after he was stopped by the occupants of a white double cab bakkie at around 20:30.

He was on his way from a relative’s house to his home in Sherwood Gardens when the bakkie came from the opposite side of the road and pulled in front of him.

This was just after the father and daughter had stopped at a petrol station to buy pies and snacks.

“I was forced to bring my car to a standstill and a man got out of the bakkie’s passenger side and moved towards me. He spoke in Afrikaans and insisted on seeing who was in the vehicle,” he said.

“I rolled down my window slightly, whereupon the man started banging on it and uttering racial insults. I reversed to pass the bakkie, which had blocked my way.

“It was then that shots were fired at my vehicle. I’m not sure how many but if I remember correctly I could hear three shots.”

One of the bullets burst through the left-hand side of the vehicle and the back window.

“My child was in her car seat in the back on the left side and thankfully she was unharmed,” said the man.

The bakkie sped away in the opposite direction. The victim was unable to see the number plate.

“I called the police who came to the scene,” he added.

The father and child were not injured. A case of attempted murder is being investigated by the Brakpan SAPS.
