
Police Minister General Bheki Cele released the quarter two crime statistics 2022/23 last Wednesday.
The stats reflect crimes reported to SAPS from July 1 to September 30. The figures are compared to the same period last year when the country was still in lockdown due to Covid-19.
They reveal the Brakpan police station occupies the eighth position on the list of top 30 stations in the country for robbery at non-residential premises.
Brakpan SAPS also occupies position 18 nationally for cash-in-transit robberies.
The full stats for Brakpan are as follows:
Contact crimes (crimes against a person)
• Murder increased from six cases the previous year to 11.
• Sexual offences increased from 14 to 18.
• Attempted murder increased from six to eight.
• Assault GBH increased from 11 to 33.
• Common assault decreased from 65 to 50.
• Common robbery increased from 15 to 26.
• Robbery with aggravating circumstances increased from 74 to 137.
Total contact crimes increased from 191 to 283.
Sexual offences
• Rape increased from nine cases the previous year to 10.
• Sexual assault increased from four to eight.
• Attempted sexual offences remained the same and no cases were reported.
• Contact sexual offences decreased from one case to none.
Total sexual offences increased from 14 to 18.
Some subcategories of aggravated robbery
• Carjacking increased from 20 cases the previous year to 28.
• Robbery at residential premises increased from eight to 11.
• Robbery at non-residential premises increased from 10 to 38.
• Bank robbery remained the same and no cases were reported.
• Robbery of cash-in-transit vehicles increased from no cases to one.
• Truck hijacking remained the same at four cases.
Contact-related crimes
• Arson decreased from one case to none.
• Malicious damage to property increased from 41 cases to 42.
Total contact-related crimes remained the same at 42 cases.
Property-related crimes
• Burglary at non-residential premises decreased from 31 cases the previous year to 15.
• Burglary at residential premises increased from 40 to 73.
• Theft of motor vehicle and motorcyle increased from 29 to 43.
• Theft out of or from motor vehicle decreased from 42 to 38.
• Stock theft remained the same at two cases.
Total property-related crimes increased from 144 to 171.
Other serious crimes
• All theft not mentioned elsewhere increased from 176 cases the previous year to 196.
• Commercial crime increased from 71 to 94.
• Shoplifting increased from 37 to 40.
Total other serious crimes increased from 284 to 330.
A total of 17 community-reported serious crimes increased from 661 to 826.
Crime detected as a result of police action
• Illegal possession of firearms and ammunition decreased from 21 cases the previous year to six.
• Drug-related crime increased from 89 to 106.
• Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs increased from 18 to 39.
• Sexual offences detected as a result of police action remained the same at no cases.
Total crime detected as a result of police action increased from 128 to 151.
