Beware of spikes on roads – EMPD

A pattern was established that showed these crimes usually happen on weekends and result in unnecessary accidents and loss of life.

The EMPD has warned motorists to be extra vigilant on their commutes because criminals place spikes or objects on public roads to rob motorists of their belongings.

Together with other law enforcement agencies, the EMPD has received several complaints regarding spikes strategically placed on the roads to rob motorists.

A pattern was established that showed these crimes usually happen on weekends and result in unnecessary accidents and loss of life.

The hotspot areas include the R562, Olifantsfontein Road; the R21 along the highway past OR Tambo International Airport; the N3 between Leondale and Barry Marais and the N17 between Rondebult and Heidelberg roads.

“The EMPD advises motorists not to stop when they hit a spike or experience a tyre puncture, especially at night,” said EMPD media liaison officer Constable Thabiso Makgato.

“Motorists should rather drive slowly to the nearest garage or police station.”

The EMPD will continue to have high police visibility around the hotspot areas.

“Those found placing objects to endanger the lives of other motorists will face the full might of the law.”
