Weekend crime round-up

An overview of crimes reported to local SAPS from December 8 to 10.

The following crimes were reported to Brakpan police over the past weekend:

Friday – A laptop was stolen during a break-in at a home along De Waal Street in Sherwood Gardens.

• A home in Landman Street, Sherwood Gardens, was broken into and a laptop and a bag containing spectacles, a jacket and other items were stolen.

• A smartwatch, a tablet, a laptop and a digital camera were stolen during a break-in at a home along Northdene Avenue.

• A purse was stolen from a car parked at the corner of Voortrekker Road and Prince George Avenue.

• A suspected car thief was shot during a confrontation with security personnel at a complex along Gloucester Street in Kenleaf.

After observing movement on the complex cameras at about 02:15, a security officer went to investigate.

A blue Volkswagen Polo with a male occupant was parked near the complex gates. Another man was outside the car.

This man pulled out a gun and pointed it at the security officer, who then drew his weapon and fired two shots.

The gunman ran away and the man in the Polo got out of the car and attacked the security officer with a screwdriver.

The security officer fired a shot, wounding the man. After hearing the shots, other security personnel arrived and the police were called.

It was discovered the Polo had been stolen and the owner, who was in another province at the time of the incident, was notified.

The injured suspect was taken to hospital under police guard, and the Polo was taken to the Brakpan Police Station.

• A woman was robbed of her cellphone and purse at the corner of Bedford Street and Gardiner Avenue at around 13:00.

The victim was walking to a shop when four men travelling in a silver Volkswagen Polo threatened her with a gun and demanded her belongings.

• Batteries, tractor wheels, truck rims and other goods were stolen from a business along 1st Road in Witpoort Estates.

• Two men hijacked the driver of a white Datsun Go along Heidelberg Road near Dalpark at around 19:30. The victim was stationary at the traffic lights when two men armed with guns approached his car.

He was told to move from the driver’s seat and the gunmen got into the car. They drove to Tokyo Sexwale, an informal settlement in Reiger Park, where the victim was searched and robbed of his firearm and cellphone.

• The driver of a grey Volkswagen Golf 7 was robbed of his vehicle at the corner of Prince George Avenue and Olympia Road in Brenthurst at about 23:00.

The victim told police he was forced to stop his car when the driver of another vehicle overtook him and then suddenly braked in front of him.

Two men armed with guns got out of the car and ran towards him. The victim immediately left his vehicle and fled to a nearby petrol station to seek help. The victim’s wallet, house keys and two cellphones were inside the car.

Saturday – A blue Toyota Yaris was stolen from the corner of Van der Walt Road and Devon Avenue in Dalview.
• A home in Bertram Street, Sherwood Gardens, was burgled of a TV, a laptop, jewellery and other valuables.

Sunday – A shop along 12th Road in Maryvlei was burgled of cellphones.
