Online fraud cases on the increase

Shoppers need to be extra vigilant when buying goods advertised on social media.

Brakpan police have warned residents to be cautious when buying goods online.

This follows an increase in fraud cases reported to local SAPS over the last few months where people have been scammed by fake online retailers or fraudsters posing as private sellers.

According to police, the perpetrators are sophisticated and create websites that appear legitimate.

Residents are advised to use only reputable online retailers when shopping online.

When dealing with a private seller, especially those who advertise on social media, buyers are urged to view the item in person before paying any money.

Victims are encouraged to immediately report fraud and scams to their banks and the SAPS.

It is also important to note that police are not ever liable for non-refunded money, even once a fraud case is registered and investigated.
