There is excitement growing at Bosman Stadium as Brakpan Rugby Club prepares for its opening home match of 2024.
Brakpan will welcome Sasolburg in the Presidents Cup opener on April 6. With areas around the stadium being cleaned up and a new coaching staff appointed, many will be hoping the crowds show up in numbers to watch the local team.
“It’s amazing what is happening now. It’s not me, it’s the community. It’s the people and it’s the sponsors. One must always honour the people in the community that play a part.
“It’s also the club’s committee,” said the club’s marketing director Frikkie Bosman as he addressed the new wave of optimism.
On the playing front, Brakpan has shown good signs already. The club recently sent out two senior teams (white and green) to Nigel’s Rugby Day where both sides enjoyed wins against Benoni and Meyerton.
“It is still the pre-season so there isn’t too much to read into it,” said the club’s vice-chairperson Sarel Korf cautiously.
The club also welcomes a new head coach in Regardt Botha.
“In club rugby, we would like to play in the Gold or Community Cup. So that’s the main goal. Gold would be, either this year or next year, the ultimate prize. We want to be competitive and provide guys with more exposure. We also want to create a winning culture,” he said.
Brakpan also wants to see the fans come out in large numbers to support them.
“We started a little spark and now the way the community is getting involved is amazing. We want to show the people that they must support the club.
“It hasn’t been a nice part of town but we are going to make it great for people and they’ll be safe. We are going to be a force again,” said Bosman.
With an eye on success in the Valke Peregrine League, which starts on May 25, the club is geared towards making a big impact in the Presidents Cup.
