Community rallies with Clean Brakpan to transform neglected abandoned property
Communities should take responsibility for keeping abandoned properties clean, according to Clean Brakpan.
Residents in Brakpan Central recently reached out to Clean Brakpan for some equipment to clean up the empty plot on the corner of Derby and Cavendish Street.
To their surprise, Clean Brakpan jumped in and cleaned it for them on November 5, turning the eyesore abandoned property into a decent space.
“Abandoned properties can quickly become a blight on a community, leading to decreased property values and increased safety concerns.
“Illegal dumping exacerbates these issues, creating environmental hazards and potential hideouts for criminal activity,” said Lisa Jordaan, one of the Clean Brakpan leaders.
“The situation described by the residents of Derby and Cavendish is a stark example of how a community can be affected by such negligence.
“The property in question has become a source of pollution and a security risk, prompting action from local figures like Clr Riaan van Zyl and the Clean Brakpan team.
“Their initiative to clean up the property is commendable and highlights the power of community action in addressing urban decay.
“However, tackling illegal dumping is not just about clean-up efforts; it’s about prevention and accountability,” she continued.

Clean Brakpan cleaning the space is a start, but according to Lisa it’s only worth it if the community gets involved to maintain spaces such as this and prevent illegal dumping.
“Funding for equipment and maintenance is a significant hurdle, and the team’s call for assistance is a reminder that community improvement is a collective responsibility,” she said.
“Residents and businesses can contribute to these efforts in various ways, from volunteering time to providing financial support.
“ It’s a partnership between the community, local authorities, and organisations like the Clean Brakpan team that will ensure a cleaner, safer environment for all.”
