Leak in Sonneveld turns empty plot into temporary wetland
Residents of the Sonneveld apartment complex battled for weeks with a massive water leak from a burst main pipe, turning an empty plot into a wetland and wasting countless litres of water before the issue was finally fixed.
Residents of a Sonneveld apartment complex on the corner of Farquaharson Road and Graaf Street struggled for weeks with a serious water leak at an adjacent empty plot of land, turning the latter into a wetland.
The leak, reportedly a burst main pipe, was eventually repaired on November 6.
Resident Casper van Heerden (69) said the leak had been a problem for about four weeks after a blockage complaint was attended to.
The blockage was cleared, but water streamed out of a broken pipe, with countless litres going to waste. Most of it ended up in large puddles on the empty plot, but much of it literally went down the drain.

Peeking down the complex’s manhole, one could see a mini waterfall of fresh water running into and down the sewage drain, going to waste.
“They tell us to use water sparingly, but then they don’t fix leaks, which cause the loss of thousands of litres daily.
“You report and report the problem, and the complaints are just closed without the problem being solved,” said Van Heerden.
The Brakpan Herald requested comment from the CoE on November 5 about the progress in attending to this complaint and why calls are closed without any action. No response was received at the time of publication.
