Shotokan Karate Club holds prizegiving ceremony

Some of the students were also graded.

Brakpan Shotokan Karate Dojo, under the training of sensei Lolia Basa, held their prizegiving on November 23, awarding all students a trophy to commend their dedication.

The dojo, which usually trains in the open air at the park next to the Brakpan Sports Grounds or sometimes in a nearby church hall, trains young children who can’t otherwise participate in the sport, as it is an expensive sport, making it accessible and affordable.

The goal is to teach the children discipline, self-defence, and respect and to keep them busy and off the streets. Some of the children can pay membership, grading and uniform fees, but many of the students can’t afford it. They get sponsored by generous donors.

The children may not train in an indoor dojo, but their dedication and the excellent guidance of Lolia show during the opportunities they have to compete against other dojos.

They don’t have many of these, as the fees to compete are costly, on top of travel costs. Yet, they have their sights set on the All Africa Games in 2025 and are busy preparing to showcase their skills.

They are desperately in need of sponsorships. However, to continue to develop the students on a physical, intellectual and social level for the betterment of the community.

On top of that, an indoor space that is readily available would also greatly benefit the group, as they currently have to cancel practice whenever there’s inclement weather.

Anyone willing to make a difference in the lives of these youth can contact Lolia on 071 884 3231.
