Duo nabbed with gold bars out on bail

The men are expected back in court next year.

The two men arrested in Brakpan last week for illegal possession of gold have been released on bail.

They were arrested in Helderwyk Estates on November 26 by the Gauteng Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation team, in collaboration with their head office counterparts.

The 33-year-old Zimbabwean national and 20-year-old South African citizen were apprehended as they were allegedly attempting to find a buyer.

They were found in possession of six unwrought gold bars valued at approximately R15m. Both suspects were charged with illegal possession of gold, contravening the Precious Metals Act, Act 37 of 2005.

Investigations are underway to trace the origin of the gold and to identify any additional suspects. During a recent appearance at the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court, the two were released on bail of R20 000 each.

They are required to report to the police station once a week. The case has been postponed to January 25.
