Brakpan police unite at candle-lighting ceremony
The event also featured prayer and moments of reflection.
Brakpan SAPS commemorated special days of observance in December with a heartfelt candle-lighting ceremony at the station this week.
The ceremony and prayer service was held on Monday and Tuesday in commemoration of the 16 Days of Activism campaign, which is observed from November 25 to December 10, Words Aids Day (December 1) and International Day of Persons with Disabilities (December 3).
The ceremony was led by Brakpan SAPS station commander Brigadier Johanna Ngoma, with the assistance of support head Colonel Karlien Swanepoel, other departmental heads and members of the SAPS.
The SAPS Employee Health and Wellness (EHW) team organised the sessions, whereby each attendee lit and held a candle, observed a moment of silence, and prayed.

The EHW’s chaplain, Captain Godfrey Booysen, explained the lighting of candles symbolises faith, miracles, enlightenment, peace, concentration, and joy.
He further explained that the moment of silence is a reflection of honour and remembrance of those who have died from Aids, and gender-based violence.
The prayer was a solemn request for God’s divine intervention.
Ngoma extended gratitude towards the EHW team for the gesture and encouraged all in attendance to acknowledge and appreciate people living with disabilities, as well as those affected by HIV/Aids, and victims of GBV.
The brigadier further stated that GBV awareness should be conducted throughout the year and not only for 16 days.
