Weekend crime round-up

An overview of crimes reported to local SAPS from January 17 to 19.

The following crimes were reported to Brakpan police over the past weekend:

Friday – A man was arrested at an address along Wenden Avenue following a break-in. The occupant of the home heard voices in the yard at around 03:30.

He then watched through a window as three men attempted to gain access to a store room on the property. Unable to get inside, the men turned their attention to an outside room, where they forced open the door.

The occupant contacted security personnel for assistance, and they arrived shortly afterwards. As the occupant went outside to meet the security personnel, the intruders fled from the room.

One of them, who escaped through a window, threatened to stab the occupant. He was armed with a knife and a screwdriver, and was also carrying a pair of pliers.

This man attempted to jump the fence but was apprehended. He was found in possession of a piece of stolen copper cable.
The man was handed over to SAPS and arrested.

• A Kitzinger Avenue shop owner and an employee were tied up during a robbery. Three men entered the store at around 11:30 and threatened the shop owner with a gun.

He and the employee were forced into a small room, where the robbers tied the victims’ hands and feet. The gunman kept watch over them while the other two ransacked the shop.

The trio then fled the scene in a white Suzuki hatchback. Cellphones, lights, computers, solar lithium batteries, inverters and other valuables were stolen.

• Two cars were stolen. A green Fiat Uno was stolen from the corner of Escombe Avenue and Elliot Street, and a red Toyota Corolla Cross was stolen from Wattle Street in Dalpark.

• A car parked along Craigholm Street in Dalview was broken into, and a laptop was stolen from the vehicle.

• A TV was stolen during a burglary at a home in Tweedy Road, Brenthurst.

Saturday – No priority crimes were reported at the time of publication.

Sunday – Two petrol station employees were robbed of their personal belongings by three robbers. The incident took place at a petrol station along Springs Road in Maryvlei at around 00:15.

Two of the robbers were armed with guns. The victims were forced to lie down, and were searched and robbed of three cellphones and cash.

The robbers told the pair they wanted the tags for the petrol pumps as they wanted petrol, but fled without taking any.
