New venue for Brakpan parkrun

The event needs more volunteers to make sure the whole route is covered at all times during the run.

Brakpan parkrun, now at the Brakpan Indoor Sports Centre, hopes to be a convenient and popular event for CBD residents.

On February 1, around 20 runners gathered at the sports centre, at around 08:00, kicking off their 5km run for the week.

The first finisher was Donevan Martens, who finished in a time of 22:42 minutes.

Second was Willem Bekker, with a time of 23:26, and third was Bongiwe Simelane with a time of 26:42.

Danie van Vuuren completed his 50 runs milestone.

With limited volunteers and resources, run director Madalane Bekker uses a multitude of markers and landmarks to indicate the route, along with a tail walker.

A tail walker is a volunteer that walks the trail behind the group to make sure no one follows the wrong route, and that there’s help if someone needs it.

The tail walker for this event was Trudie Thiart.

The event desperately needs more volunteers along the trail, and at the end, in order to ensure that no one is missed.

For those interested in volunteering, contact Madalane on 069 868 7912.
