Brakpan super sleuth tracks down armed robbery trio

Rapid coordination between a Brakpan detective and the JMPD saw three suspects quickly apprehended.

Sergeant Tuka Gavade, a detective at Brakpan SAPS, has been applauded by station management for his swift and professional investigation into an armed robbery case which led to the quick arrest of three suspects.

A case of armed robbery was registered at the local police station on May 3, after two men, who were standing and chatting outside a residential address along Hamilton Avenue, were robbed by three men at about 20:45.

One of the robbers pointed a gun at the pair and demanded they hand over their cellphones and money.

The three robbers were travelling in a silver Renault Triber with registration number MF7 2TZ GP, and they fled with a Samsung A23 and an iPhone XS both valued at R10 150.

Gavade, assigned to the case as the investigating officer, circulated the motor vehicle and was summoned on May 6 by the Johannesburg Metro Police Department to the Johannesburg Central Police Station as they had located the motor vehicle.

“Sergeant Gavade immediately responded and found the Renault with one male occupant. Upon interrogation, the suspect attempted fleeing but was quickly cornered,” said Brakpan SAPS Sector 1 manager and communications officer Constable Audrey Buthelezi.

The gas gun, which resembles a real firearm, used during the robbery. It was found at an address in Benoni.

“The suspect gave a residential address in Benoni, where the other two suspects were found, as well as the firearm used during the robbery.

“Sergeant Gavade further requested tracing on the Renault, and it confirmed that the vehicle was in Hamilton Avenue on the day the crime was committed.”

The three Malawian suspects, aged 25, 30 and 31, and the Renault were brought back to Brakpan. The trio was detained for armed robbery and illegal immigration.

The firearm used during the robbery was discovered to be a gas gun. The Renault was confiscated as it was used in the commission of crime.

Brakpan SAPS detective branch commander Colonel Eugene Scheepers stated Gavade demonstrated that he is a team player by requesting assistance from other law enforcement agencies, which yielded positive results.
