iRun relay teams shine in cross-country relay
Two of the teams, the U13 boys and girls, placed exceptionally well.
Over 30 athletes from Brakpan’s iRun Athletics Club showcased their talent at the ASICS Menlo Cross-Country Relay at Hoërskool Menlopark on May 16.
The event drew young runners from across the province, with iRun’s presence strongly felt across all age groups, from U8 to U19.
“Specialising in school-going athletes, the iRun Athletics Club continues to make its mark on the Gauteng athletics scene, and the recent event was no exception,” said coach Jared de Waal.
Among the standout performances were the club’s U13 4x2km relay teams. The U13 girls’ team of Megan-Ann Roberts, Melany and Mikayla Mans and Zelmari van Rooyen ran a strong race to finish fourth in 37:31.5.
Three of the four, the Mans sisters and Roberts, are Brakpan athletes.

The U13 boys delivered an impressive performance, claiming second in a competitive field in 34:47.6.
The team of Caleb Roberts, Matthew Pietroiusti, Hanro Hurter and Dean van Zyl, with Roberts, Hurter and Van Zyl are all from Brakpan.
De Waal was proud of the athletes, “It was fantastic to see so many of our athletes compete with heart and determination,” he said.
“Events like these test fitness and build teamwork and club spirit, and our athletes showed that in abundance,” he continued.
The club continues offering young runners in Brakpan opportunities to train, compete and grow.
