Truck and motor vehicle hijacking awareness conducted by SAPS

The increase in hijacking instances spurred an operation to make motorists aware of the safety measures they should follow.

SAPS Brakpan sector managers conducted an awareness campaign on the R23 (Heidelberg Road) near the corner of Koot Street on July 29, aiming to alert road users about criminal activity taking place along the route.

They were joined by the Crime Prevention Wardens. The campaign followed an increase in hijackings along this road, as well as the N17, R554, and Airport roads.

Truck drivers, in particular, were advised to be extra cautious and to always practise safety measures when travelling. This includes stopping only at petrol stations or other public spaces if they need to rest.

Motorists were urged to thoroughly inspect their vehicles before leaving home or work to avoid falling prey to criminals who may try to stop them by claiming there is something wrong with their vehicles.

During the stop, vehicles and trucks were also searched, including the occupants.

“Hijackers impersonate law enforcement officers, and their vehicles are fitted with blue lights. They are armed and dangerous, and road users are urged not to confront or fight with these criminals,” said Constable Audrey Buthelezi, Sector 1 manager and Brakpan SAPS communications officer.

“Fighting them may cause more harm to the victims. Always have emergency numbers on speed dial and keep a panic button with you in case of any emergency,” she concluded.
